CALIFORNIA MISSIONS

Mission Project & Report

The fourth grade class has completed Chapter 3 that focused on California Missions. This packet includes the information you will need to complete the Mission Project and Mission Report. Please review all the information within this packet and sign and return the bottom portion of this page no later than Monday, January 10th.

Students have a choice of the following:

1.) You may make a poster of your mission labeling all the areas listed on the rubric below.

2.) You may make an original model of your mission including areas listed on the rubric below. This cannot be made from a store-bought kit!

In addition to the poster or model all students will write a report about their mission. Please make sure that when you write your report that you change the information into your own words. It should sound like you are telling the reader the information rather than it reading it as if it were copied out of an encyclopedia or the Internet.

Time management is very important, so if you can, spend a little time each day working on this project. You will find it easier than waiting until the last minute.

The report and project are due on Friday, February 25, 2011. Enjoy this exciting learning experience!

Thank you,

Mrs. Renteria

California Mission Poster or Model

When you are creating your Mission, please keep in mind that most missions had similar layouts. Each mission included a church sanctuary, a living area for the Padres, and several workshops. The buildings were built around a central patio area in the shape of a quadrangle. This design provided a central place for meetings as well as a safe place for those on the inside. Only the La Purisima did not follow this quadrangle layout.

When creating your mission, please make it look as realistic as possible, and include as many details as you can. Your mission will be graded on the items listed below. Again, use this grading rubric as your checklist.
