Mission
Project and Report
The
fourth grade class is currently working on Chapter 3 that focuses on the California
Missions. This packet includes the information you will need to complete the
Mission Project and Mission
Report. The bottom half of this page shows the name of the mission your child
will be working on. To make it as fair as possible, the students chose missions
randomly.
Students have a choice of the following:
1.) You
can make a poster of your mission and its layout, labeling the areas listed on the attached rubric.
OR
2.) You can
make an original model of your
mission and its layout, labeling the
areas listed on the attached rubric. The
model may not exceed 15 inches by 15 inches. We have limited space
in the classroom and it is very important that you stay within these
guidelines. The model cannot be made
from a store-bought kit!
In addition to the poster or model all students will
write a report about their mission. Please
make sure that when you write your report that you change the information into
your own words. It should sound like you are telling the reader the information
rather than it reading it as if it were copied out of an encyclopedia or the
Internet.
Time
management is very important, so if you can, spend a little time each day
working on this project. You will find it easier than waiting until the last
minute.
California
Mission Poster or Model
When you are creating your Mission, please
keep in mind that most missions had similar layouts. Each mission included a church sanctuary, a
living area for the Padres, and several workshops. The buildings were built around a central
patio area in the shape of a quadrangle.
This design provided a central place for meetings as well as a safe
place for those on the inside. Only the
La Purisima did not follow this quadrangle layout.
When creating your mission, please make it
look as realistic as possible, and include as many details as you can. If you
are making a poster, draw your mission’s layout from bird’s- eye view. Your
mission will be graded on the items listed below. Again, use this grading
rubric as your checklist.

Class Presentation
- As an “expert” on your mission, you will share your findings and research with the class. You can think of this presentation as if you were telling a story.
- Practice your presentation at home so that you can memorize it. Note cards may be used to help you in your presentation but good eye contact with your audience is very important. You may not read from your report.
- Your presentation should include the interesting parts of your mission’s history and what makes it unique. Ideas include: natural disasters, fires, battles, religious experiences, etc.
Presentations are 3-5 minutes in length. Please come prepared!
